What happens with search engines when your dominion name changes from .com to .org?

My client´s website´s main keywords are ranking first place in several search engines like Yahoo, Google and MSN. My client has asked me to change the dominion name which ends with a .com to a .org What are the implications of this? Would it loose its top positions by having the new .org start from scartch?

Should I keep the .com with an index page that says: "Our website has moved and it is now www.abc.org" and then add a link to the new .org website? Then wait until the .org has climbed to top positions and then get rid of the .com one?

You are on the right track.
Search engines cannot automatically determine if the website has moved from .COM to .ORG. Hence, a redirect is the best way to inform a search engine about the change.

You can also re-register the website now operating under .ORG name with search engines.

Your search rating with .ORG domain will remain very low for some time and then start to climb. However, if you keep the .COM redirect active, your clients will have no trouble in finding you.
