Linking a business's existing domain to a new website?

Hi, here is the situation; the company for which I am revamping a website has an existing site under an existing domain (eg xxx.com.au). I did a whois on it and saw that it was last edited in 2002. I want to take down the existing website and link that domain name to the new host where I have uploaded the new website. What do I need to ask the company to get off the prior designer/maintainer in the way of log in's/passwords/codes etc? Once I have all this info, what on earth do I do!?! I am also worried the company may not be able to contact the prior maintainer so what would happen in this instance? I need to have the website under that domain because that is the url listed on all their business stationery/cards! Please explain step by step in idiot terminology for me! Also, does anyone know an Aussie web host that is simple to use and offers tech support? Thankyou in advance!

Once you get into the domain/registrar info, either setup that domain to simply redirect to the other site or change the A record to point to the new IP of the web server hosting the files. If you change the A record or the DNS location, it could take up to 24 hours to propogate on the internet....
